John Lewis Wins Retail Project of the Year

GE Lighting is delighted to announce that the ground-breaking John Lewis Ipswich store, which incorporates the company's LEDs, has won 'Retail Project of the Year' at the LUX Awards 2013.

The Partnership's first 100 percent LED store, the judges said this project gave a glimpse of "the future of retail lighting, and showed how to use LEDs without the slightest compromise to the lit environment".
The decision for John Lewis to move to energy efficient LED technology was motivated by its CSR goal to reduce energy consumption in its stores by 20 percent in 10 years. The retail brand opted for luminaires supplied and adapted by Edge Lighting, incorporating GE Lighting's Infusion LED modules throughout the store. The lighting scheme is delivering significant energy savings and enhancing the retail experience for customers.

About the Project

John Lewis Wins Retail Project of the Year

John Lewis began in 1864 with the opening of the first shop in London's Oxford Street. Through the efforts of its 81,000 partners, John Lewis was awarded 'Retailer of the Year' in 2011 and has succeeded in becoming the largest department store retailer in the UK, with 39 John Lewis shops (30 department stores and nine John Lewis at home) and a growing online business.

When it came to installing LEDs in the new Ipswich store, John Lewis had very specific criteria for the lighting scheme. This included a colour temperature requirement of 3000K warm white combined with precise light control via a 15-degree narrow beam optical system. Furthermore, since LED technology continues to evolve, the new lighting scheme in the John Lewis store had to be easy to upgrade in the future.

The twist-in GE Infusion™ LED module enables the entire LED engine to be removed and upgraded in seconds, ensuring the new lighting installation is completely future-proof. An ideal solution for John Lewis, it means the team can simply choose to upgrade at a time when it is suitable to do so.

Designed for both ambient and accent indoor lighting, GE Infusion™ is one of the most flexible lighting solutions on the market, with applications extending across many different types of luminaires. A common base design opens the door to dozens of different design possibilities, allowing creative freedom for a wide range of environments.

The implementation of LED has been such a success that the John Lewis team are already planning to utilise the new GE Infusion™ Modules coming to the market in early summer 2013, to make the most out of the extended variety of the modules. This will mean John Lewis can further improve upon the existing energy savings and develop the lighting scenario to match the display of the merchandise.

Along with the clear environmental benefits, the GE Infusion™ modules ensured that the retail experience for John Lewis' customers was significantly improved. The LEDs deliver a bright, clear, white light that aids visual comfort and ensures colours are true to life.
