Best in Class Student Design Competition with GE Lighting
Dubai, UAE; October 2, 2012: GE Lighting (NYSE: GE), an industry leader in major lighting solutions for commercial, industrial and residential use, will underscore its commitment to nurture local talent in the lighting design industry by providing vocational training to the winners of the ‘Best in Class Design' competition that is being held as part of Light Middle East.
GE Lighting is sponsoring the designer talent contest open to university students in the region for developing energy efficient lighting design using GE Lighting's specific light sources. The winners will have an internship opportunity with the company, offering hands-on training on various aspects of lighting design. Students were challenged to develop an innovative aesthetically striking lighting fixture using energy efficient lamp technologies and the competition was open for graduating talent from Sharjah University, Abu Dhabi University and AU Dubai.
From the submissions, 11 entries were short-listed for the final round, and Heba Hani, a student of American University in Dubai; Batool Al Safadi from Abu Dhabi University and Sanaz Mosleh from American University in Dubai, were adjudged as winners for displaying high standards of creativity and potential for practical application.
Heba Hani was selected for her work on the Saturn Collection, which is inspired by cosmic perfection with a variety of shapes revolving around the same base concept; Batool Al Safadi presented an Aqua Floor Lamp, a translucent elegant modern style floor lamp that is aesthetically pleasing and functionally effective; and Sanaz Mosleh designed the Lumiblade organic light emitting diode with the light fixture made of small geometrical LED modules that create different shapes when viewed from different angles.
The jury comprised Elham Al Awadhi, an architect and designer for Dubai Municipality, Professor Massimo de Falco of the Luiss University in Rome, Dima Al Srouri, a Senior Associate Planner at the Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council, and Professor Marco Ferretti of the University of Naples.
Students from American University of Dubai, Sharjah University, and Abu Dhabi University, also participated in GE's technical workshop, aimed at highlighting their understanding of lighting aesthetics, sustainability, functionality, maintenance and technical aspects. GE Lighting is showcasing its latest range of energy-efficient lighting solutions for street & roadway, retail and office applications, as well as putting the spotlight on its latest project accomplishments in the region at Light Middle East until October 3, 2012, at the Dubai International Convention Center. GE Lighting has a rich history in the Middle East having established long-standing business association with over 70 key partners over the past several decades. The company established its full-fledged team in the region 15 years ago, and today has the most talented professionals driving the operations.
