GE Lighting, together with the Environmental Department of the City of Castro Urdiales, has developed an ambitious renovation project of the seafront lighting system, improving security and quality of light whilst reducing energy spending.
The city of Castro Urdiales, in the Cantabria region, is a municipality that focuses particularly on environmental management. A series of actions already carried out in the town have been recognized by the Green Flag-Responsible Municipality Award in its XIth edition, demonstrating the city's commitment to sustainable practices.
As part of this commitment, the lighting system of the town's seafront was upgraded with GE´s LED luminaires. The goal was to reduce energy consumption, to improve pedestrians' security and gain visibility and quality of light. Specifically, 69 Iberia LEDs of 63w and 39 of 90w were installed along the seafront, whilst all sodium and metal halide lamps were substituted in all roadways, especially in the commercial areas, by high output CMH lamps.
Results & benefits
Iberia LED is a luminaire designed to provide high energy efficiency lighting in urban settings with a maximum consumption of 90w, reducing energy consumption by as much as 60%. In addition, Iberia LED offers an outstanding performance in both vertical and horizontal uniformity. Together with the high chromatic reproduction contributed by LED technology (white light), it facilitates face recognition and visual comfort. Its advanced optical design enables the light to be directed specifically where it is wanted. Ana Cantero, Outdoor Fittings Product Manager for EMEA, added about Iberia LED: “The long service life of our LED solution—50,000 hours - makes it a particularly well suited answer where a maximum cost reduction is sought in public lighting”.
With these changes the city has increased the amount of light and the quality of color reproduction, which has improved the security of pedestrians as well as vehicles by enhancing the visual reactions of the drivers and passers-by.
