Our Customer

Food City (Abington, Va.) operates 104 supermarket outlets in the tri-state regions of Southeast Kentucky, Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee. Fed up with the high energy costs and maintenance hassles of fluorescent fixtures in vertical refrigerated and frozen cases, the grocer recently decided to make the switch to GE Lighting's super-efficient, long-life Immersion™ RV40 LED lighting system in 7,400 display case doors across 89 stores.

The Expectation

With a goal of boosting the bottom line, Food City evaluated a wide array of strategic options, looking for the one that would have maximum impact and optimize ROI. The team found that by installing energy-efficient LED Refrigerated Display Lighting in vertical coolers, it could significantly reduce lighting and refrigeration costs – its leading overhead expenses. After an extensive competitive evaluation of several LED refrigerated display lighting technologies, GE's 16-watt Immersion RV40 LED Lighting system emerged as the clear winner, saving Food City over $300,000 annually in energy costs.

Our Solution

Immersion™ RV40 LED Refrigerated Display Lighting

Energy Savings - Energy savings was one of the key factors that drove Food City's payback period down. The grocer started by holding a competitive evaluation of several LED refrigerated display lighting technologies at its headquarters store in Abington, Va. Inside the flagship store, there were multiple aisles of frozen food and ice cream that used the same type of case. Food City installed one manufacturer's LED system in each row and monitored electricity consumption with wattage meters, discovering that GE's 16-watt Immersion™ system used the least amount of energy.

Total annual energy savings for Food City will exceed $300,000 now that the grocery chain uses 1,965,000 fewer kilowatt hours of electricity as the result of its LED case lighting update.

Reliable long Life - The reliability of an LED system was also a critical driver in Food City's payback equation. Conversion to long-life LED lighting also promised fewer service calls to attend to the often unreliable fluorescent fixtures. The reputation of the GE brand for quality and reliability and the company's ability to back up their performance claims factored into Food City's decision. Before Installing GE's Immersion™ RV40 LED series, preventative maintenance measures were costing Food City more than $5 per door per year, or $37,000 annually.

Visual Appeal - The visual appeal of the products tested played a significant role in Food City's selection of LED Lighting System. An internal team of corporate executives, store managers, marketing/merchandising personnel and product stockers liked the bright, uniform light produced by GE's LED solution. Using advanced optics, the Immersion™ RV40 LED Lighting system greatly diminishes glare and light spillover into aisles while helping bring to life the full vibrancy of food packaging colors.

Now as you walk along the store aisles all the displays are consistently lit. You can look through the glass and easily see the product labels without having to open the doors.

Results & Benefits

By best meeting Food City's requirements for long reliable service life, energy efficiency and aesthetic impact, GE's Immersion™ LED system was declared the clear victor in Food City's vertical refrigerated display case lighting showdown. Amongst the LED Systems tested, GE's Immersion™ RV40 LED Lighting System would provide the fastest return-on-investment at 28 months. Now Food City's annual energy & maintenance costs combined have fallen an estimated $337,000, nearly $3,800 per store.

With the help of lighting distributor Illuminating Technologies (Greensboro, N.C.), the project was completed in time for the busy holiday shopping season, with installation services managed seamlessly by Lighting And Maintenance Providers (L.A.M.P.) of Greensboro.
