The solution

Fluorescent tubes require an ambient temperature of 25˚c to operate optimally. Embodiment within freezer display cases consequently means light levels are compromised impacting merchandise illumination. Additionally, fluorescent lamps have difficulty re-striking in sub-zero temperatures forcing many retailers to operate the display cases 24/7, consequently consuming needless energy out of trading hours. Immersion™ LED fittings perform well at low temperatures, distributing light evenly and achieving higher average illuminance, maximising visual impact. In addition, they are significantly more energy efficient and can be turned on and off without detriment. As part of an initiative to cut energy usage across their estate, Iceland has also specified a move away from switch-start to high frequency control gear across their sales floors in partnership with GE Lighting, providing a 30% energy saving.

Results and benefits

LED Refrigerated Display Lighting at Iceland Food

Iceland Foods has replaced the fluorescent tubes used in all of its store's upright freezers with our Lighting's Immersion™ LED refrigerated display lighting, an initiative that will achieve a payback of less than 2 years though energy saving as well as reduced maintenance costs. The move to GE Lighting's Immersion™ LED refrigerated display lighting will also enhance the way produce is displayed. Cases achieve higher average lux levels and more uniform light distribution across the package facings. The light source remains hidden, significantly reducing distracting glare and light spill.

Graham Ireland, Project Manager at Iceland, recognised the impact such a change would make. He said: "Traditionally, with the use of fluorescents, food retailers have always battled to strike a balance between reaching optimum product performance and saving energy. GE Lighting's Immersion™ LED system has overcome this, as we now have a product that offers long life and excellent light quality at low temperatures, with minimal energy usage." He concludes, "By working closely with GE Lighting we've been able to source solutions that allow us to invest in innovative technology offering an excellent ROI. In the case of Immersion we forecast payback in just 18 months."
