Olympic Rings

Outdoor lighting

In collaboration with the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG), GE Lighting has lit the giant Olympic Games rings in Edinburgh, Glasgow and London with its range of powerful LED and CMH flood lighting fixtures. The lighting has been organised with all the cities' councils to ensure the installations are reused after the London 2012 Olympic Games come to a close.

London's Tower Bridge

CMH and LED floodlight lighting the Olympic Rings in Edingburgh, Glasgow and London

The Olympic Games Rings at London's famous Tower Bridge form part of the new state-of-the-art lighting system provided by GE Lighting, which has been designed to enhance its architectural features, while cutting energy consumption considerably. The rings, which measure 25 meters by 11.5 meters in size, have been floodlit using GE Lighting's CMH Floodlights and will remain suspended from the famous landmark for the 45 days of the Olympic Games.

GE Lighting's highly efficient range of CMH flood lamps offer a high quality, white light solution for outdoor applications - allowing specifiers to reduce lighting pollution, CO2 footprint and energy consumption and at the same time enhance urban environments.

George Square in Glasgow

In preparation for its role in the games, Scotland celebrated its first set of Olympic Games Rings in George Square in Glasgow – standing at 16ft high and 33ft long, these are the largest stainless steel rings in the UK. Brightly lit by GE Lighting's LED floodlights, the rings will act as a spectacular and iconic welcome to the city for visitors and spectators alike.

The Mound in Edinburgh

Edinburgh's Olympic Games Rings have been be erected on The Mound, which runs between the Old Town and the New Town and are visible throughout much of the centre of the city, especially the main Princes shopping street. GE Lighting's LED flood lighting was ideal for this application as it offers convenient mounting options for both vertical wall surfaces and features an advanced LED optical system that provides improved lighting control versus a standard flood light to optimise distribution to meet photometric requirements.

In addition, the LED Floodlights offer more than 11 years of service life to significantly reduce maintenance frequency and expense, based on a 50,000-hour life and 12 hours of operation per day.

Results and benefits

“We are delighted with GE's lighting solution for the London 2012 Olympic Games Rings, commented the spokesperson of LOCOG. "We gave GE a number of specific requirements, which included creating legacy lighting that would last beyond the Olympic Games wherever we could as well as temporary installations where products could be utilised for future events. The result is fantastic and we've no doubt created a significant buzz in the cities ahead of and during the Games.”
